Colour is the key to every design; colour lets us express our personalities in our external environment. Adding a splash of vibrant Turquoise or a hint of mellow Mustard can change the mood in any room. As a designer, I encourage my clients to add their splashes of colour with furnishings, art and textiles against a neutral backdrop of permanent finishes that will stand the test of time.
For the last decade or so, that neutral colour has usually been gray. Gray works well paired with almost any colour and it can be cool, warm, light, dark or any combination of those. Of late, market has been flooded with anything and everything gray but I am seeing a new (old) neutral cropping up in the marketplace and it's been a dirty word in the design industry in recent past. Beige.
We have been told that all things come full circle and I have witnessed this firsthand with the revival of all-things-90's in the fashion industry. And, so it goes, what we once sneered at (let's remind ourselves of how much we once hated brass for a moment) eventually will wiggle its way back into our lives and our homes. Perhaps beige will enter your home in the form of a little pillow here and now maybe a vase there and the next thing you know, you are considering beige kitchen cabinets , with brass handles of course. Personally, I am in the beginning stages of what I can see as a new obsession; I am visualizing natural materials, warmth and light and I don't think that's half bad.
